Abstract:   (13 Views)
The widespread use of social networks and the deep integration of machine learning algorithms into these platforms have increasingly personalized individuals’ information environments. By analyzing users’ behaviors, including searches, views, likes, shares, and duration of engagement, these algorithms prioritize content that aligns with their existing interests and beliefs. The present study argues that this mechanism not only limits information diversity but also makes attitude revision more difficult by reinforcing confirmation bias. When inaccurate or biased beliefs are present, it may further contribute to their consolidation. When family members, including parents and children as well as couples, are exposed to different information environments, misunderstandings may not only remain unresolved but may also intensify as each party repeatedly encounters content that reinforces their own perspectives. Using a narrative review and analytical approach, this study examines the conceptual mechanisms linking filter bubbles to the quality of family relationships by reviewing existing evidence on echo chambers, technof erence, and the effects of polarization on intimate relationships. The analysis of the literature suggests that filter bubbles may constitute one of the structural factors contributing to reduced mutual understanding, increased conflict, and the erosion of family intimacy. However, the strength and direction of this association depend on the nature of social media use, relationship quality, media literacy, and social conditions. Further empirical research is needed to establish a direct causal relationship. Finally, several strategies are proposed, including strengthening algorithmic literacy, diversifying information sources, creating a safe space for family dialogue, and reducing smartphone interference during face-to-face interactions.
